Mike Campbell is performing with The Dirty Knobs at Farm Aid in Virginia Beach on Saturday, completing a 41-year circle from the festival's inaugural event in 1985 when he backed Bob Dylan with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. This reunion is notable as it marks Campbell's solo career success following four decades as a guitarist for the Heartbreakers, demonstrating his evolution from sideman to confident frontman and bandleader.

According to Campbell's 2025 memoir, Dylan personally telephoned him to secure the Heartbreakers for the subsequent True Confessions Tour, which saw the band play roughly 60 shows across Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the United States, including prestigious venues such as Madison Square Garden. The Dirty Knobs are currently touring behind their critically acclaimed fourth album "Mission of Mercy," with Campbell noting his newfound vocal confidence and ability to engage audiences, whilst maintaining the band's distinct blues-rooted identity rather than functioning as a Heartbreakers tribute act.
