Mike D has released his debut solo album, Thank You, and revealed in a new Consequence cover story how he told Beastie Boys bandmate Ad-Rock he was making it. He waited until he was fully committed before calling, likening the conversation to admitting he was "in a relationship" — with the record. Ad-Rock reportedly took the news warmly and supportively, joking that he himself was considering playing drums, though he was later annoyed to learn via the internet, rather than a phone call, that Mike D was already playing live shows nearby.

The 13-track album arrived on 28 August via Capitol Records, the first full-length new music from a Beastie Boy since 2011's Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. Mike D, 60, deliberately avoided asking Ad-Rock to guest on the record, wanting it to be distinctly his own rather than a quasi-reunion, though he worked with his sons Skyler and Davis alongside collaborators including Carter Lang and Jason Lader. He is now touring with his 5D band, with US dates through October before a run of UK and European shows in late October and November, including stops in Brighton, Glasgow, Manchester and London.
