Kate O'Connor secured Northern Ireland's first athletics gold at a Commonwealth Games since 1986, winning the heptathlon at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow. The 25-year-old from Newry had built momentum through a strong 2025 season, taking silver at both the World indoor and outdoor Championships and bronze at the European indoors, but had yet to claim a senior outdoor title before this victory. Her win was aided by the withdrawal of England's Katerina Johnson-Thompson, the 2022 champion, though O'Connor still had to overcome difficult weather conditions to seal the result.

O'Connor finished on 6,569 points, 291 clear of nearest rival Jade O'Dowda of England. She battled torrential rain during the shot put on the first day, managing only 12.85m, but recovered with a strong 200m and went on to post season's bests in the long jump (6.37m) and javelin (52.85m) before closing out victory with a composed 800m in 2:10.46. She will formally receive her gold medal at Thursday evening's medal ceremony.
