Meteorologists have warned that Sydney and Brisbane are facing an unusually intense burst of spring heat this weekend, with temperatures potentially reaching 30C in Sydney and over 30C in Brisbane, threatening to break long-standing seasonal records. Weatherzone forecaster Ben Domensino said a 30C day in Sydney on Saturday would be only the fifth time in 168 years of records that the city has hit that mark so early in the warming season, driven by two low-pressure troughs pushing warm westerly winds towards the coast.

Sydney reached 28C on Wednesday and 27C on Thursday before a cooler 23C forecast for Friday, with Saturday's expected 31C well above the city's September average maximum of 20C. Brisbane is set for highs of up to 35C by Sunday, with the Bureau of Meteorology saying temperatures across eastern districts could run 4C to 6C above average and persist into next week. The warm spell follows Sydney's warmest winter on record, with meteorologists attributing both events to a lack of strong cold fronts and a negative Southern Annular Mode driving dry, warm conditions across eastern Australia.
