Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says an object that struck eastern Poland during a Russian attack on Ukraine was probably a Russian missile. The incident is significant because it appears to represent a breach of Polish, and therefore Nato, airspace during the war in Ukraine, though authorities are still confirming the missile’s identity and origin.

The object created a crater about 10 metres wide near Tarnawa Kolonia, roughly 100km from Ukraine’s border, at about 03:40 local time on Thursday. Poland’s military tracked it and sent an F-16 to intercept before it vanished from radar; around 20 objects were reportedly seen near Polish airspace overnight, but no casualties have been reported.
