Chris Rock returns to directing after a 12-year gap with "Misty Green," a Hollywood-set drama premiering at the Toronto Film Festival about a Black actress and former Emmy winner whose career has collapsed amid addiction and family strife. According to Deadline's review, the film joins a long lineage of Hollywood "has-been" dramas, but distinguishes itself by centring a Black woman's experience, a perspective rarely explored in this well-worn genre, and is anchored by a standout lead performance from British actress Rosalind Eleazar.

Eleazar, known for "Slow Horses," plays the title character alongside a cast including Anna Kendrick as her supportive best friend, Topher Grace as her exasperated agent, Adam Driver as a filmmaker friend with dubious motives, and Daniel Kaluuya as her troubled brother; Rock himself appears as a director from Misty's past. The reviewer praises Eleazar's performance as one of the year's best and singles out Kaluuya, but finds the film uneven, criticising some of Rock's own dialogue and his use of language reminiscent of his stand-up rather than the character he plays.
