MLS announces ‘sprint season’ schedule, with accommodations for cold-weather locales

The Guardian ·

MLS will start its one-off 2027 “sprint season” on 19 February, with the final scheduled for Memorial Day weekend in May. The shortened campaign is a transition as the league shifts to a calendar running from late summer to spring in 2027-28, a move intended to align MLS with other major leagues and improve its position in the global transfer market.

Each team will play 14 regular-season matches against conference opponents, with equal numbers at home and away; Decision Day is set for 8 May, followed by a single-elimination play-off for the top eight teams in each conference. Inter Miami host FC Cincinnati in the opening match, while the schedule includes earlier kick-offs and other adjustments for cold-weather markets. All matches, including the final, will stream on Apple TV without local blackouts.

In short

  • MLS’s one-off 2027 sprint season starts on 19 February.
  • Teams will play 14 conference matches before the play-offs.
  • The season is a bridge to MLS’s new calendar in 2027-28.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Moving MLS to a late-summer-to-spring calendar could bring its transfer windows and player contracts closer to those of major leagues abroad, making it easier to recruit and retain talent. A brief transition season may help the league make that change while preserving a meaningful competition, and cold-weather adjustments could reduce disruption for clubs and supporters in harsher climates.

The case against

A shortened season with only 14 regular-season matches may give teams less time to recover from poor results and make the competition feel less representative of a full campaign. The calendar shift could also bring more matches into winter conditions, while an unusual transition format and single-elimination play-offs may create uncertainty for clubs and supporters.

Explained simply

Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top professional football league in the United States and Canada. Its teams are divided into Eastern and Western conferences, and the strongest teams in each conference qualify for the play-offs.

For many years, MLS has generally played from spring into autumn, while several leading leagues elsewhere run from late summer into spring. Changing the timing is intended to bring MLS closer to those leagues’ schedules and make it easier for clubs to compete for players in the international transfer market.

The 2027 campaign is planned as a shorter bridge between the two calendars. Cold-weather cities can face difficult conditions for outdoor matches in winter, so the league has made schedule adjustments for those locations.
