Modern Warfare 4’s New DMZ Mode Is Full of Broken Promises

Polygon ·

Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode has arrived as a more complete version of the extraction mode first introduced in 2021, but it falls short of the slow, methodical experience its reveal trailer promised. The review says the mode’s fast movement and familiar Call of Duty combat make it better suited to the series’ casual audience than to players seeking the tension of games such as Escape from Tarkov or Arc Raiders.

Players enter Hajin, a fictional area along the North and South Korean border, to gather loot and extract safely. Solo runs can become overwhelming as gunfire draws more enemy soldiers, while PvP resembles Warzone, with quick kills and players waiting near extraction points. The story missions are a stronger feature: one solo mission to rescue an injured VIP involved killing more than 150 enemies in a prolonged firefight.

In short

  • DMZ’s trailer promised a slower, grittier extraction experience.
  • Enemy numbers and fast PvP make solo play difficult.
  • Its deeper story missions stand out from the genre.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

The mode may be a successful evolution of DMZ for Call of Duty’s broad audience: fast movement and familiar combat make matches accessible, while the missions offer substantial action and a clear objective. Its intense firefights and PvP may be enjoyable in their own right, even if they differ from slower extraction games.

The case against

The reveal promised a slow, methodical extraction experience, but the fast movement, familiar Warzone-style combat and quick kills undermine the tension that promise suggested. Solo players can be overwhelmed by escalating enemy fire, and PvP near extraction points may make careful looting and escape feel less viable than rapid combat.
