Daniel Billings has been jailed for at least 20 years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Molly Ticehurst, a killing a New South Wales judge found was a calculated act of revenge after she reported him to police for alleged sexual assault. Ms Ticehurst, a 28-year-old childcare worker, was stabbed 15 times in her bedroom at Forbes in April 2024, an attack that had a significant national impact and intensified Australia's public debate over domestic and gendered violence.

Justice Natalie Adams sentenced Billings, 31, to a maximum term of 28 years, describing his offending as in the "high range of seriousness" because he carried out the killing in the exact manner he had long threatened. Billings had repeatedly menaced Ms Ticehurst after she ended their relationship in December 2023, and was freed on bail a fortnight before the murder due to no judge being available that weekend. The court heard he recorded chilling videos detailing his plans hours before the attack, driven by "extreme hatred" and a belief he had been wrongfully accused; the judge noted he had also killed the only witness in his pending rape trial.
