Teenage e-bike riders injure cyclist in high-speed Thornaby collision
Two 15-year-old e-bike riders collided at high speed with a 46-year-old cyclist in Thornaby, Teesside, leaving him with life-changing injuries. The incident matters because the victim remains in hospital and police said the injuries will affect him and his family for the foreseeable future.
CCTV showed the teenagers riding Sur-Ron bikes, performing wheelies and travelling on public roads without helmets or protective clothing. On 31 January, shortly before 2pm, they tried to overtake a car on Thorntree Road and struck the cyclist coming the other way; both later pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Teesside Magistrates’ Court. They were disqualified from driving, ordered to pay £495 compensation each and given youth referral orders.
