Moment motorist collapses building after ploughing into takeaway while on his phone in crash
A 21-year-old driver in Stoke-on-Trent has been jailed after crashing his car into a takeaway shop while using his mobile phone, causing the front of the building to collapse. Daniel Mohammed lost control of his Ford Focus and ploughed into the Rose Fast takeaway in Burslem despite being warned by his passenger to slow down, leaving her with a fractured collarbone and broken forearm bones. The case highlights the dangers of distracted and reckless driving, with the judge noting it was fortunate neither occupant was more seriously hurt.
The crash happened at around 6am on 20 July last year, with footage showing Mohammed approaching the shop at speed before smashing into it and writing off his car. Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard he had overtaken near a zebra crossing and on a blind bend while holding his phone, and had a previous drug-driving conviction. He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without insurance and using a handheld phone, and was sentenced to 26 months in prison, banned from driving for three years and ten months, and ordered to pass an extended test.
