Filipino tennis player Alexandra Eala won the Washington Open, beating world number three Jessica Pegula in the final and becoming the first Filipina to claim a WTA title. The 21-year-old, a graduate of Rafael Nadal's academy, overcame weather delays and the loss of the first set before the match concluded on Monday, with a large and vocal Filipino community turning out to support her. The victory caps a rapid rise for a player now ranked world number 20, who defeated top-three seeds Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka and Pegula en route to the title.

Eala earlier this year became the first player from the Philippines to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam in the Open era, beating Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon, and previously knocked out Swiatek at the 2025 Miami Open. Washington DC alone is home to more than 75,000 Filipinos, with a further four million across the US expected to follow her at the upcoming US Open. Prominent figures including Nadal, Manny Pacquiao, Greg Rusedski and Andy Roddick have praised her, with Rusedski calling her "the most exciting player on the WTA Tour" and suggesting an improved serve could put her in contention for a Grand Slam title.
