Mother and daughter mauled to death by grizzly bears in horrifying attack

Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and her daughter Selah Reed, 20, were found dead after going missing during a walk near Bella Coola, British Columbia. Authorities say evidence suggests an animal may have been involved, and are investigating a suspected bear attack as they work to identify any threat to local residents.

The pair were reported missing on 1 November after not returning from an afternoon walk; their remains were found on successive days. Officials say it is unclear whether more than one bear was involved, and have set traps and imposed a curfew while searches continue. The region is home to an estimated 10,000 to 13,000 brown bears, and a family fundraiser has raised more than CAD$50,000.
