Mother of hero who brought down Oregon school shooter reveals heartbreaking call moments later: ‘Mom, I couldn’t save them all’
Kaylub Giamanco, 36, shot and killed a gunman who had opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, where Giamanco’s two daughters are pupils. His mother says he called her straight afterwards and was distressed that he had not been able to save everyone; his intervention is credited with preventing further deaths.
The 16-year-old attacker, Griffin John II, killed three pupils, aged five, eight and 11, and teacher Meghan Lambert, 25, and injured two others before Giamanco stopped him. Police said John fired 15 rounds and targeted a special needs classroom where he had once been a pupil. Giamanco’s mother says he is traumatised, and a fundraiser for therapy, legal costs and time away from work had raised nearly $280,000 by Saturday afternoon.
