Independent MP Helen Haines was critically injured when a vehicle struck her outside her Wangaratta electorate office in what police and the Prime Minister described as an apparently deliberate attack. Counter-terrorism authorities and ASIO are investigating, although the motive has not been confirmed; the case has heightened concern about the safety of elected representatives.

The 65-year-old was hit by a white 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser at about 3.30pm on Monday while retrieving belongings from her car. She was taken to hospital and then airlifted to Melbourne, with fears she could lose a leg. A 43-year-old local man was arrested at the scene, but no charges had been laid by late Monday. The attack occurred near Porepunkah, where two police officers were shot dead last year; authorities said there was no further threat to the community.
