MPs call for firefighting planes and barbecue ban to combat UK wildfire threat
MPs have urged the Government to prepare for more frequent and severe UK wildfires with a national strategy, public awareness campaign and temporary bans on disposable barbecues during high-risk periods. The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee says fires are now part of the country’s reality as climate change raises the threat and most incidents are linked to human activity.
The committee cited 1,132 wildfires attended by fire crews in England and Wales in the year to 16 August 2026, more than the total for all of 2025. Fires affected areas across the UK, destroyed 19 homes in Stourbridge and led to an emergency risk alert for England and Wales on 14 August. MPs also called for investment in specialist firefighting equipment, including planes, support for fire wardens and a range of land management measures suited to local conditions.
