Murder-suicide epidemic rocks one of America’s richest zip codes: Mystery wiping out millionaire families sparks troubling theories
Three couples have been found dead in suspected murder-suicides in Santa Monica this year, after no such cases were reported there between 2020 and 2025. The cluster, alongside a rise in cases across Los Angeles County, has prompted concern about pressures affecting residents in an affluent community.
Experts cited in the article say financial strain may contribute, despite appearances of wealth, and point to housing costs, homelessness and business closures as sources of frustration. One nearby case involved nonprofit director Jeremy Ferguson and his wife Mandy Zelinka, who were found dead in their Venice home in April; investigators said another man fatally shot his pregnant wife before killing himself.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The cluster deserves serious attention: apparent wealth does not protect people from debt, housing costs, business setbacks or other pressures, and financial strain may be harder to recognise when families seem prosperous. The cases and wider rise reported in Los Angeles County justify examining whether economic stress and gaps in support are contributing factors, while avoiding assumptions about any individual case.
The case against
Three suspected cases in one city do not establish an epidemic or show that financial strain caused the deaths; a cluster can occur by chance, and the circumstances of each case may differ. Treating affluence or economic frustration as an explanation risks drawing conclusions before investigations and broader data support them, so claims about a trend should be carefully qualified.
