Eight new knife surrender bins are being installed across South and West Yorkshire towns and cities as part of a Home Office-funded scheme to remove weapons from the streets. The rollout has been welcomed by Caroline Willgoose, whose 15-year-old son Harvey was fatally stabbed at his Sheffield school in February 2025, who says it represents progress and a fitting legacy for her son.

The bins, located in Barnsley, Dewsbury, Doncaster, Halifax, Leeds, Rotherham, Sheffield and Wakefield, are managed by the charity Word 4 Weapons and allow anonymous disposal of knives, mirroring similar schemes already running in Greater Manchester, the West Midlands and London. The Home Office says more than 14,500 weapons have been surrendered at such bins since July 2025, and policing minister Sarah Jones noted knife crime is down 11% since the general election, as part of a wider government commitment to halve knife crime within a decade.
