Music Industry Moves: Yoshiki Signs With BMG

Variety ·

Japanese singer-songwriter Yoshiki has signed a global distribution and publishing administration deal with BMG through his own record label, Melodee, marking a significant expansion of his international presence. The agreement covers new releases, catalogue material and publishing administration outside Japan, positioning BMG to support the artist's push into new creative territory that blends rock, pop, classical and contemporary styles.

Distribution will begin with "Forever Love (Live)", a new collaboration with vocalist Josh Groban, and also covers Yoshiki's solo album "Eternal Melody" as well as X Japan albums released from 1993 onwards, including "Art of Life" and "Dahlia". In further industry moves, Concord Music Publishing has signed Israeli artist Noga Erez and her collaborator Ori Rousso to a global publishing deal covering future work and key catalogue tracks, while cancer charity City of Hope has appointed Black Music Action Coalition head Willie "Prophet" Stiggers to the executive board of its Music, Film and Entertainment Industry group, which has raised over $180 million for the organisation.

Explained simply

Yoshiki is a Japanese musician known as a singer, songwriter and drummer, and a founding member of the rock band X Japan. He also releases music as a solo artist, including work that draws on classical music as well as rock and pop.

A record label releases and distributes recordings, while music publishing deals cover the rights to songs and how they are administered. BMG is an international music company; Melodee is Yoshiki’s own label. The agreement concerns his music outside Japan, including solo releases and parts of X Japan’s catalogue.

These arrangements can help artists make their recordings and songs available in more markets and manage the rights attached to them. Yoshiki’s deal is one of several industry developments in the report, alongside a publishing agreement for Israeli artist Noga Erez and Ori Rousso, and a charity board appointment.
