Alex Gibney's four-hour documentary "Musk", showcased at the Venice film festival, offers an expansive study of Elon Musk, the trillionaire behind Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, X and Grok AI. The film examines his controversial stint leading Trump's Doge unit, where cost-cutting reportedly increased the US deficit while granting him access to sensitive social security data, and portrays him as a contradictory figure: dull yet destructive, childish yet immensely powerful.

Gibney could not secure interviews with Musk or Trump, so he instead created a photorealistic AI "Muskbot" to voice the mogul's reported statements. The documentary draws on interviews with former colleagues, Musk's father Errol, first wife Justine, and former girlfriend Ashley St Clair, covering his South African upbringing, the death of his infant son, his large number of children across multiple relationships, and his business trajectory from an early online directory venture through PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX.
