Fred Pepperman, 53, drowned off Seacrest, Florida, on 14 July 2019 while rescuing three of his daughters from a powerful riptide during a family holiday. After saving Kathryn and Grace, he reached Olivia, told her, “I got you. You’ll be okay,” and pulled her to safety, but was then dragged underwater and died.

Pepperman’s 22-year-old daughter Mallory was also in the water but could not get far enough to help. The family had travelled 520 miles from Maryville, Tennessee, for their annual holiday; Pepperman, who owned a fire and safety services business, was remembered by his widow Julie as a devoted father who regularly coached and supported his daughters.
