My therapist thinks I should chuck the Amazon Bee Frontier out a window
An always-on recording device that Victoria Song initially hoped would help her check her memories has instead made her doubt them. The Amazon Bee Frontier transcribes conversations and uses AI to summarise them, but Song says its errors and confident interpretations can make her feel “perpetually gaslit”; after weeks of discussing it, her therapist urged her to throw it away.
Over 19 months, Bee has improved at separating her speech from television dialogue and can draw on calendar and photo data, suggest tasks and answer questions about past conversations. Song says it has sometimes helped with work, but it has also attributed statements to her that she says were never made, mistaken jokes for facts and interpreted her cats’ nicknames as additional pets. She connects the device’s effect on her trust in her own memories to difficult family experiences, including relatives’ dementia.
In short
