The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has launched an urgent investigation after 14 elephants were found dead near Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya, in what officials describe as the first mortality event of this scale in the region in decades. Tissue samples have been sent to laboratories to establish whether disease, poisoning or another cause is responsible, with authorities so far finding no evidence pointing to a single explanation. The deaths are significant because the Amboseli ecosystem has seen notable success in curbing poaching, making a sudden cluster of unexplained fatalities especially alarming for conservationists.

The carcasses, spanning different ages and sexes, were discovered at various sites between 15km and 30km from the park's boundaries, suggesting more than one family group has been affected. The Amboseli ecosystem, which straddles the Kenya-Tanzania border, is home to an estimated population of more than 2,000 elephants as of 2025, according to the Amboseli Trust for Elephants. KWS officials, including head of communication Duncan Wanyama, say the investigation remains ongoing as experts work to determine the cause.
