Mysterious freezer failures at US military bases trigger federal investigation
US Army investigators are examining refrigeration failures at military commissaries after food spoiled at bases across the country in August. They are considering whether a cyberattack caused the outages, amid reports of similar incidents in France.
At least six commissaries were affected, including sites in Arizona, Wyoming, Rhode Island, Mississippi and California. Fort Huachuca reported that its freezers had gone into defrost mode overnight, spoiling all frozen food; elsewhere, units were reportedly set to higher temperatures. Army investigators are working with US defence agencies and French law enforcement to assess whether the incidents are connected. A separate cyberattack in France reportedly manipulated supermarket refrigerators, spoiling food and causing fires.
