NASA has opened its first major new wind tunnel in more than 40 years, marking a significant milestone for future aviation and space-exploration research. The Flight Dynamics Research Facility, unveiled on Friday at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, will serve as a testing ground for future aircraft and space missions, consolidating capabilities that had previously been spread across older, separate facilities.

Built through a partnership between NASA and the US General Services Administration, the new facility replaces two older wind tunnels that had been in operation for more than 80 years, offering more advanced and efficient testing capabilities under one roof. Dr Trina Dyal, NASA Langley's centre director, said the facility represents a significant advancement for the agency and the nation, enabling research intended to keep the United States at the forefront of aeronautics and space exploration.
