NatWest promises not to close Sheffield High Street branch until ‘at least 2029’ after revamp

The Star (Sheffield) · 2 hours ago

NatWest has completed a significant refurbishment of its Sheffield High Street location and pledged to maintain operations there until 2029 at the earliest, positioning the investment as a sign of confidence in the city centre. The facility now offers expanded space for customer consultations and community group use. Local MP Abtisam Mohamed has welcomed the development, noting that reliable banking access remains essential for a functioning high street.

However, the move reflects a broader pattern of banking sector contraction in Sheffield. Other institutions are simultaneously exiting the market: Lloyds is shutting its High Street branch in January alongside a track record of multiple closures since 2022, and Halifax will close its Hillsborough location the same month. NatWest itself has already closed branches on Ecclesall Road and a cash machine at the hospital, leaving just two other branches in the city.

  • NatWest invests £480,000 to refurbish Sheffield High Street branch, committing to keep it open until at least 2029
  • Commitment comes after previous NatWest closures in the city, whilst other banks including Lloyds and Halifax continue withdrawing from Sheffield retail banking
