NBA sits out Election Day yet again while other sports leagues go about business as usual
The NBA gave all 30 teams Election Day off for the fourth time in five years, using the previous night’s games and voter-awareness campaign to encourage participation in the US midterms. The decision set the league apart from other sports competitions that continued on Tuesday.
All 15 NBA games on Monday featured players wearing “VOTE” shirts during warm-ups. The league also took Election Day off in 2022, 2023 and 2024, but played in 2025, when only Virginia and New Jersey held gubernatorial elections. On Tuesday, the NHL staged 11 games, eight in the US, while the Mid-American Conference held two college football games and more than 25 college basketball games took place.
In short
- The NBA gave every team Election Day off.
