NBC’s ‘Dateline’ Headed to Canada

The Hollywood Reporter ·

NBC’s true crime franchise *Dateline* is expanding into Canada with *Dateline Canada*, its first international spin-off. The series will air on Citytv and Citytv+ from 26 November, hosted by investigative journalist Diana Swain, as part of a licensing deal with Rogers Studios.

The programme opens with a two-hour special about Robert Baltovich, who was convicted over the 1990 disappearance and murder of his girlfriend, Elizabeth Bain. He spent nine years in prison, and was acquitted in 2008 after prosecutors dropped all charges; the production says its review of police files uncovered an investigation that had not previously been reported. The series will examine high-profile Canadian crimes and the people involved in them.

Dateline is an American television programme that investigates criminal cases through interviews, records and on-the-ground reporting. Its stories often look at how police inquiries and court proceedings unfolded, as well as the people affected.

In Canada, Citytv is a television network owned by Rogers, which also operates the streaming service Citytv+. Diana Swain is a Canadian investigative journalist, and the new programme is part of a licensing agreement between NBC and Rogers Studios.

The opening case concerns Elizabeth Bain, who disappeared in Toronto in 1990, and her boyfriend Robert Baltovich, who was convicted in connection with her death. He spent nine years in prison and was acquitted in 2008 after prosecutors dropped the charges; the case has drawn attention to questions about how evidence is investigated and convictions are reviewed.
