Netflix executives reportedly considered withdrawing the three-part documentary series “Michael Jackson: The Verdict” shortly before its 3 June release, amid concerns about possible legal action from Michael Jackson’s estate and a backlash from fans. Netflix disputed that account, saying the release proceeded as planned and the series remained in its Top 10 for three weeks.

The programme revisits Jackson’s 2005 criminal trial, in which he was acquitted of all charges, including child molestation, and includes perspectives from people who believed he was guilty as well as supporters who maintain his innocence. Variety’s anonymous sources said Netflix was particularly concerned by the estate’s legal history, including disputes with HBO over “Leaving Neverland” and ABC over another Jackson documentary; however, Netflix had reportedly received no contact from the estate at the time of publication. One source also said some complaints sent by fans were later found to have come from bots.
