Netflix Failed at Video Games. Now It’s Trying to Promote Them
Netflix will exclusively stream an extended preview of Grand Theft Auto VI before it appears on other platforms, marking an unusual marketing partnership between the streaming service and Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two. The move matters because it positions Netflix as a major promotional channel for games despite its unsuccessful attempts to establish itself as a conventional gaming platform.
The livestream begins on 27 August at 3pm Eastern time, with the footage due on other social platforms six hours later. Netflix launched games in 2021 but has since reduced its AAA ambitions and closed two studios; nevertheless, its 325 million subscribers could help introduce GTA VI to people beyond established gaming audiences. The arrangement follows leaks of GTA VI gameplay and story details, while Rockstar has also faced criticism over reportedly not launching the game with physical discs.
