Netflix Fans Officially Leave the Streamer’s ‘Yellowstone’ Rival in the Dust

Collider · 2 hours ago

Netflix has yet to produce a genuine rival to Yellowstone despite several years of trying, with its main contender, Ransom Canyon, now plateauing in the ratings rather than building momentum. The gap matters because rival platforms, particularly Paramount+, have successfully capitalised on the appetite for Taylor Sheridan-style ranch dramas, while Netflix's biggest attempt in the genre continues to underwhelm critics even as it retains enough of an audience to be renewed.

Ransom Canyon, starring Minka Kelly and Josh Duhamel, launched in 2025 to mixed reviews but was renewed for a second season, which debuted last month. Its overall Rotten Tomatoes score stands at 42%, below even Yellowstone's weakest-reviewed season (54%), and the new season has fared worse than the first, dropping to a 40% critics' score compared with season one's 45%. Netflix has also tried other Westerns, including American Primeval and Little House on the Prairie, but none has matched the cultural or commercial impact of the Yellowstone franchise.

  • Netflix's Ransom Canyon fails to match Yellowstone's success or acclaim
  • Season two scores lower with critics (40%) than season one (45%)
  • Paramount+ remains the stronger challenger in the ranch-drama genre
