Netflix has ordered an eight-episode young-adult gothic romance series, “Sid & Zoey”, from writers and co-showrunners Jon Kasdan and John Shiban. The commission expands Netflix’s investment in YA programming, combining a romantic storyline with supernatural mystery and producers associated with major genre-focused studios.

The series follows Sid, an amoral New York teenager sent to live with a Mississippi police chief’s family, where he becomes drawn to the chief’s punk-rock daughter, Zoey, and the town’s hidden dangers. Bad Robot and Blumhouse Atomic Monster will executive produce, with J.J. Abrams, James Wan and others joining Kasdan and Shiban; Netflix’s existing YA successes include “Wednesday”, “Ginny & Georgia” and “My Life With the Walter Boys”.

Young-adult, or YA, television is made chiefly for teenage and young adult viewers, though it often attracts a wider audience. Gothic romance combines a love story with a dark, unsettling setting, secrets and often supernatural or mysterious elements.

Netflix is a global streaming service that has invested heavily in series aimed at younger viewers, including dramas, romances and fantasy stories. Its better-known YA titles include Wednesday, a mystery based on the Addams Family character, and Ginny & Georgia, a family drama.

Bad Robot is the production company founded by filmmaker J.J. Abrams, while Blumhouse Atomic Monster brings together companies linked to producers Jason Blum and James Wan, both known for horror and thriller projects. Their involvement suggests the programme will draw on experience in suspense and genre storytelling as well as romance.
