Netflix Sets Trump Doc About Secret Plane Swap in Turkey

Variety ·

Netflix will release "The Decoy Plane" on 4 September, an instalment of its Instadocs series examining how the White House secretly swapped out Donald Trump's aircraft as he left a NATO summit in Turkey in July. Trump was filmed boarding Air Force One but then left via a catering truck to another plane, while reporters remained aboard unaware he was no longer on the aircraft they were travelling on. The episode drew criticism when it emerged, with Trump accused of misleading journalists and putting them, along with White House staff, at risk.

The documentary features interviews with reporters who were on board, including the AP's chief White House photographer Alex Brandon and Reuters' Gram Slattery, who describe being told by staff to lower their window shades without explanation. It later emerged the ruse was prompted by threats against Trump from Iran; Trump had said he would leave Turkey on an older Air Force One rather than the Qatar-donated 747-8 he arrived on, but was instead taken to a military jet before being secretly reunited with the reporter-filled plane during a stop in Britain. The film is executive produced by Josh Tyrangiel, Connor Schell, Steve Yaccino, Libby Geist, Aaron Cohen and Alexa Conway, and produced by Words + Pictures.

In short

  • Netflix documentary reveals Trump's secret plane swap after Turkey summit
  • Reporters left unaware president had switched aircraft via catering truck
  • White House cited Iran threats; move sparked backlash over deception

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Supporters could argue that secretly moving Trump to a different aircraft was a prudent security measure after threats against him, while avoiding public disclosure of his route or the protective plan. A decoy may have reduced the risk to the president and those responsible for his security, even if the unusual operation caused confusion among the travelling press.

The case against

Critics could argue that leaving reporters aboard an aircraft they believed carried the president, without explaining the danger or the change of plan, exposed them and White House staff to avoidable risk. They may also see the misleading account of Trump’s departure as damaging trust between the White House and the press, and argue that security concerns should have been handled with clearer safeguards for those on board.

Explained simply

Air Force One is the name given to any US Air Force aircraft carrying the president. The White House press corps often travels with the president, so reporters can cover events and speak to officials while on the move.

Donald Trump was president when the reported plane switch took place during a visit to Turkey for a NATO summit. The White House said threats from Iran prompted the change; the episode raised questions about how officials protect the president while keeping journalists informed and safe.
