Netflix Shuts Down Studio Behind ‘Unhinged’ Game 6 Weeks After Release
Netflix is closing Night School Studio, the developer of horror game ‘Unhinged’, just six weeks after the game’s release, alongside Helsinki-based studio Moonloot. The decision highlights continued changes to Netflix’s games operation as it concentrates its investment on selected types of games and expands play on television screens.
Netflix acquired Night School in 2021, while Moonloot was founded in 2022. Under games president Alain Tascan, who took the role in late 2024, Netflix has identified four priorities: children’s games, party games, narrative games and mainstream titles; recent TV-focused releases include ‘Unhinged’ and ‘FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition’, played using phones as controllers.

Netflix has been building a games business alongside its film and television service, offering games to subscribers without separate purchases. Night School Studio became part of that effort when Netflix bought it in 2021; it was known for story-led games including Oxenfree.
The company’s games strategy has changed several times as it has tested mobile, console-style and television games. Netflix now says it is focusing on games for children, social party games, narrative-driven games and larger mainstream titles, with some designed to be played on a TV using a phone as a controller.
These decisions matter because they show how Netflix is narrowing its games investment while trying to make gaming a more visible part of its subscription service. Studio closures can affect the teams making games and the types of projects Netflix chooses to support in future.
