Netflix will release a seven-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck’s *East of Eden* on 1 October. The series is part of the streaming service’s effort to build dramas that can attract viewers of Western family sagas such as *Yellowstone*.

Florence Pugh leads the cast, alongside Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist, with Ciarán Hinds and Tracy Letts also appearing. Set in California’s Salinas Valley at the turn of the 20th century, the story follows the intertwined Trask and Hamilton families and explores good and evil, free will and human nature; Zoe Kazan is the writer, and Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre direct.
