Netflix’s Stellar 86-Minute Action Thriller Captures the ‘Jaws’ Formula
Netflix has added the survival thriller The Shallows to its library, with the film pairing well with the arrival of all four Jaws films on the platform from 1 September. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Blake Lively, the 2016 film is widely regarded as one of the strongest shark thrillers since Jaws, offering a smaller-scale but similarly tense take on the "human versus nature" theme that made Spielberg's 1975 classic so effective.
The Shallows follows Nancy, played by Lively, as she becomes trapped by a great white shark just a few hundred feet from shore and must fight to survive. The film was a commercial success on its original release, taking $119 million (about £94 million) at the global box office against a budget of roughly $15 million (about £12 million). Its arrival on Netflix alongside the entire Jaws franchise gives subscribers the chance to enjoy what the article frames as a natural shark-movie double bill.
