Netflix has added the survival thriller The Shallows to its library, with the film pairing well with the arrival of all four Jaws films on the platform from 1 September. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Blake Lively, the 2016 film is widely regarded as one of the strongest shark thrillers since Jaws, offering a smaller-scale but similarly tense take on the "human versus nature" theme that made Spielberg's 1975 classic so effective.

The Shallows follows Nancy, played by Lively, as she becomes trapped by a great white shark just a few hundred feet from shore and must fight to survive. The film was a commercial success on its original release, taking $119 million (about £94 million) at the global box office against a budget of roughly $15 million (about £12 million).
