New 123.4-proof whiskey prompts expert warning that stronger isn’t always better
Frey Ranch Farmers & Distillers in Nevada has released a whiskey bottled at 123.4 proof, or 61.7% alcohol by volume. A spirits expert says the high strength can bring depth and complexity, but it does not by itself make a whiskey better; flavour and balance matter more.
The Third Harvest whiskey is aged for five to eight years in oak barrels and blends five grains, all grown on the distillery’s farm. The batch is aimed at experienced drinkers, though Brown suggests adding water or ice if it tastes too strong, and consuming it mindfully with food. About 700 bottles are planned, priced at $299 each.
In short
- Frey Ranch’s whiskey is bottled at 123.4 proof.
- The expert says strength alone does not determine quality.
- About 700 bottles will sell for $299 each.
