DC Studios has released a new trailer for its upcoming Clayface film, confirming that the horror thriller will lean heavily into body horror and graphic violence to justify its R rating. The movie reworks the classic Batman villain's origin, following Gothamite actor Matt Hagen, who turns to an experimental procedure after being disfigured by a crime syndicate, only for it to transform him into a monstrous, shapeshifting clay creature. It marks the next instalment in DC Studios' rebooted cinematic universe and offers the first proper glimpse of Gotham City within this new continuity.

The film stars Tom Rhys Harries as Hagen and Naomi Ackie as the scientist who offers him the fateful treatment, and is directed by horror specialist James Watkins, from a story by Mike Flanagan, who co-wrote the screenplay with Hossein Amini. Notably, this DCU version of Gotham is separate from Matt Reeves' The Batman continuity, whose sequel isn't due until February 2028, creating some overlap confusion with DC's forthcoming The Brave and the Bold. Clayface, which DC hopes will help build momentum after Supergirl's underwhelming box office performance, is set for release on 23 October.
