New Hogwarts Legacy Trailer Shows Off Nvidia’s DLSS 5 Enhanced Lighting and Materials
Nvidia has shown DLSS 5 running in Hogwarts Legacy, where its AI-enhanced lighting and materials appear more subtle than in earlier leaked demonstrations. The update matters because it illustrates how developers can tune the technology to improve a game’s visuals while retaining its intended character designs and art style.
Nvidia says the feature can make shadows stand out, upscale textures and sharpen reflections in real time. Hogwarts Legacy is due to receive it on 5 November, with War Thunder to follow in mid-November and Where Winds Meet at launch on 23 November. DLSS 5 is limited to GeForce RTX 50-series hardware, RTX Spark PCs and GeForce NOW Ultimate.
In short
- Nvidia demonstrated DLSS 5 in Hogwarts Legacy.
- Developers can tune its visual effects before release.
- The update is limited to supported Nvidia platforms.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Supporters may see DLSS 5 as a useful way to improve lighting, textures and reflections in real time, making games look clearer without requiring developers to redesign them. The Hogwarts Legacy demonstration suggests developers can tune the effect to preserve a game’s established art style, while the option to enable it can give players with supported hardware a richer visual experience.
The case against
Sceptics may argue that AI-altered lighting and materials can still change the visual character developers intended, even when the effect is subtle, and that sharper images do not necessarily improve a game’s artistic quality. They may also question the value of a feature limited to newer Nvidia hardware, since players on older or competing systems cannot access it and developers may face extra work supporting it.
