Explained simply
Jimmy Stewart was a leading Hollywood actor before the United States entered the Second World War. In 1941, he joined the US Army Air Corps, the branch of the military responsible for air operations at the time.
Stewart served as a pilot and later commanded air crews in Europe. His wartime service became a notable part of his life alongside his film career, and accounts of it connect Hollywood history with the experiences of Americans who served in the war.
The biopic *Jimmy* centres on that change from actor to military officer. It stars KJ Apa as Stewart and is directed by Aaron Burns.
