Lucasfilm has reportedly attached Jon Watts to direct the first film in a planned new Star Wars trilogy continuing the Skywalker story after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The project is being written by Simon Kinberg and could expand the nine-film saga to twelve instalments, with Rey Skywalker expected to return.

Watts is known for directing Marvel’s Spider-Man trilogy and Star Wars’ Disney+ series Skeleton Crew, while Kinberg co-created Star Wars: Rebels and worked on The Force Awakens. Few plot details have been confirmed, but the trilogy is part of a wider Star Wars film revival, alongside Shawn Levy’s Starfighter, scheduled for 2027.
