New York Film Festival’s Currents section unveils Bardi centrepiece

Film at Lincoln Center has unveiled the Currents programme for the 64th New York Film Festival, adding a broad selection of experimental and international features, shorts and restorations. Tala Hadid’s Moroccan equestrian-ritual film “Bardi” is the section’s Centrepiece and will have its world premiere, underlining Currents’ focus on work that stretches cinematic form.
Other world premieres include Carlos Reygadas’ “Heil Jupiter!”, Tiffany Sia’s “Overt Listening”, Éric Baudelaire’s “For the Moon” and Dan Sallitt’s “What Can’t Be Mentioned”. The line-up also includes Beatrice Gibson’s “At Night”, Bruno Dumont’s “Red Rocks”, John Torres’ “The Remotes”, a restoration of Fred Camper’s late-1970s “Suicide Notes”, and Mariano Llinás’s 330-minute “Life of Jorge Borges”, alongside shorts from emerging and established collaborators.

The New York Film Festival is a major annual film event held in Manhattan and organised by Film at Lincoln Center. Its Currents section is devoted to cinema that takes less conventional forms, including experimental films, artist-made work, short films and restorations.
Tala Hadid is a filmmaker whose work has often connected personal stories with places and cultural traditions. Her film Bardi centres on an equestrian ritual in Morocco, where Hadid has family roots, and has been selected as the section’s featured presentation.
The programme also brings together directors from several countries, including established figures such as Carlos Reygadas and Bruno Dumont, as well as newer filmmakers. By presenting world premieres alongside restored older films, Currents places new approaches to filmmaking in conversation with earlier experimental work.
