New Zealand avoid World Cup shock against Fiji

BBC Sport ·

New Zealand began their Women’s Rugby League World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 18-12 win over tournament debutants Fiji, recovering after trailing by eight points. The result mattered because the three-time champions were expected to win comfortably, and it was the first time they had been behind at half-time in a World Cup match.

Stacey Waaka scored twice as New Zealand narrowed Fiji’s early lead, then Zehara Temara’s penalty kicks put the Ferns ahead. The match was settled in the closing minutes when Raecene McGregor’s cross-field kick led to Leianne Tufuga’s try. Coach Ricky Henry called the performance a “wake-up call”; New Zealand next face France, while Fiji meet Papua New Guinea.
