An Indiana father has taken a plea deal and been sentenced to 16 years in prison over the death of his newborn son, who was fatally mauled by the family's dog last September. Austin Kinsey was one of six family members arrested after one-week-old Jason Anthony Weaver died from blunt-force trauma when he was attacked by "Chomp", a five-year-old husky-pit bull mix, while briefly left unattended in a car seat. The case highlights repeated warning signs about the dog's aggressive history that the family reportedly failed to act on.

An autopsy found Jason suffered more than 180 abrasions and bruises, along with brain haemorrhages, rib fractures and torn lungs. Kinsey had been playing video games nearby when his father burst in carrying the injured baby after hearing him make noises and seeing the dog dragging him across the floor. Court documents show Chomp had bitten people before, and family members admitted they had considered rehoming or putting the dog down before the birth, with one relative even keeping a gun in the house in case of another attack. The baby's mother, Violet Weaver, and four other relatives also face neglect-related charges, with some cases still active.
