Eddie Howe has resigned as Newcastle United head coach after nearly five years in charge, following a season in which the club finished 12th in the Premier League and missed out on European football. His departure ends a transformative period in which Newcastle returned to the Champions League twice and won the League Cup, their first major domestic trophy for 70 years.

Howe, 48, said he was stepping away after reflection and needed time to recharge, describing the role as the privilege of his lifetime. He took charge in November 2021, initially helping Newcastle avoid relegation, while his coaching staff and head of performance Dan Hodges will also leave; the club says its search for a successor is at an advanced stage, with Matthias Jaissle the leading candidate.
