NHS nurse at heart of trans changing room row appeals court ruling on gender discrimination case
Nurse Sandie Peggie plans to appeal an employment tribunal ruling that rejected her claims that the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) discriminated against her because of her gender-critical beliefs. The case concerns the support she received from her union during a dispute with NHS Fife over sharing a hospital changing room with a transgender colleague.
The tribunal found no evidence that the RCN or its representative treated Peggie differently because of her beliefs, dismissing all three direct discrimination complaints. She had challenged the union’s guidance, its refusal to fund legal support for her claims against NHS Fife, and its efforts to clarify the health board’s policies on single-sex spaces. Peggie had separately won a harassment claim against NHS Fife in December 2025, while other claims in that case were rejected.
In short
- Sandie Peggie plans to appeal the ruling against her claims involving the RCN.
- The tribunal dismissed all three direct discrimination complaints.
- Her separate harassment claim against NHS Fife was upheld.
