Cooper says NHS staff who snoop on medical records should be dismissed

Daily Mail ·

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper says NHS staff who improperly access patients’ medical records should be suspended during investigations and sacked if breaches are confirmed. Her comments follow an inquiry into suspected snooping on the records of William Chapman, who died after entering a tiger enclosure at a Yorkshire zoo.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service says two employees may have accessed or tried to access information about Chapman without a legitimate reason; routine audits uncovered the concern, which was also reported to the Information Commissioner’s Office. Chapman, 24, was pronounced dead at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on 10 October. Cooper cited 15 staff dismissed by a Nottingham hospital trust for accessing records of victims of the 2023 Nottingham attacks.

  • Cooper says NHS staff who breach patient privacy should be sacked.
  • Two ambulance service employees are under investigation.
