Nicotine Is Mounting a Comeback in the Wellness Movement

Wired · 1 hour ago

Nicotine is being rebranded in wellness circles as a natural aid for focus, mood, productivity and cognitive health, but the article argues that these claims exceed the evidence. Although avoiding burned tobacco removes exposure to many carcinogens and other toxic substances, nicotine itself raises heart rate and blood pressure, disrupts sleep, strains the cardiovascular system and carries a well-established risk of addiction.

Research suggests any cognitive benefit may be limited to people with mild cognitive impairment, while healthy people may gain no advantage or even experience worse performance. Apparent improvements among dependent users may simply reflect relief from withdrawal symptoms, and although nicotine can briefly produce pleasure or alertness, long-term use may worsen stress and anxiety; quitting is associated with better mood and quality of life.

  • Nicotine’s wellness claims go beyond current human evidence.
  • Nicotine can increase cardiovascular strain, disrupt sleep and cause dependence.
  • Quitting nicotine is linked to improved mental health over time.
