Nielsen is leaning more on wearables to hear what people are watching
Nielsen is updating its television measurement methodology to better capture viewing patterns in the streaming era, when audience behaviour has become highly dispersed across platforms and devices. The company is rolling out wearable sensors—smartwatch-like devices that detect audio signals from televised content—to supplement its existing panel data, reducing reliance on self-reporting and improving accuracy across household demographics.
Starting in late August, Nielsen will incorporate wearable detection data into its ratings calculations while simultaneously refining its algorithms for device-sharing patterns and demographic representation. The company is also deploying machine learning updates to ensure older age groups are not overrepresented in its measurement samples, and expanding survey data for Spanish-speaking households.
