Nigeria reports Ebola in woman arriving from Uganda

BBC World ·

Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola case in a woman who arrived in Abuja from Uganda, making it the first West African country to report a case linked to the outbreak in East Africa. She is receiving care in isolation, and authorities are tracing contacts to limit the risk of further spread.

The woman developed symptoms on 7 October, four days after arriving in Nigeria, and laboratory tests confirmed the diagnosis. Officials have identified 44 close contacts, while her precise travel history and place of infection remain under investigation; Uganda says she passed through without symptoms and has no confirmed active cases. The wider outbreak has spread to Kenya, which has reported at least nine infections, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where more than 9,500 cases and at least 4,600 deaths have been recorded.
